PHSC Celebrates its 50th Anniversary and Black History Month: Blood Donation

Blood Donation

Charles R. Drew (1904-1950) was known as "Father of the Blood Bank."​ He pioneered the development of plasma storage, making blood donation possible.

  • Worked to improve the quality of education for Black physicians ​
  • Supervised the "Blood for Britain" drive in 1940, where US civilians donated blood for Allied war effort​
  • First director of the American Red Cross Blood Bank​
  • First African American examiner on the American Board of Surgery.​
