Shirley Chisholm: 1972 Presidential Candidate

Shirley Chisholm is best known for her 1972 presidential campaign, where she lost the Democratic nomination to George McGovern. Indicative of the African diaspora, she is the daughter of immigrants from Barbados and Guyana.

First African-American woman to serve as US. Representative in 1969. She served 7 terms.
Founded the Congressional Black Caucus and the National Women’s Political Caucus.
Nicknamed “Fighting Shirley” for her principled stance on social justice and education issues.
She moved to Florida after retirement.
