PHSC Celebrates its 50th Anniversary and Black History Month: Helena Barrington

Dr. Helena Barrington

Dr. Barrington was a pastor, singer, and beloved community leader, helping to found FAMU's Gospel Choir and the Metropolitan Cathedral of Truth. She was also a prolific songwriter and gospel music pioneer.

  • Barrington graduated from Blake High School and Tampa, going on to study at Florida A&M University, where she helped found their gospel choir.
  • She wrote and recorded thousands of gospel songs, in addition to musicals and television scores.
  • With her husband Kennith Barrington, Helena toured the country sharing their ministry through gospel music, eventually founding the Metropolitan Cathedral of Truth in 1984.
